Research and Policy DivisionsState and Community Prevention Systems
As states and communities face increasing pressure to demonstrate accountability to their various
stakeholders, there is a need to create rationale and powerful data systems that gather and synthesize
information. The State and Community Prevention Systems area focuses on developing tools, training and
services that enhance the ability of state and community agencies to strategically gather data that
support need/resource assessments, selection of evidence - based prevention programs/practices/policies,
outcome assessment and program/policy/practice improvement. Child and Family EcologyThe primary focus areas of the Division of Youth and Community Development are the evaluation of prevention programming,
building capacity at the individual, organizational, and community levels; and policy development aimed at improving the academic and social outcomes of youth and families.
In this division, CPRD staff work with state and community partners to design and conduct program evaluation research, provide extensive evaluation training and
technical assistance, and engage in numerous activities to enhance local and state capacity in the areas of program evaluation and data-driven program refinement
and improvement. The work of this division falls into four primary areas: 1) after school programming, 2) nutrition, fitness, and health,
3) coalition formation and capacity building, and 4) early childhood education. School Reform and InnovationThe School Reform and Innovation area has focused on the evaluation of middle-level school reform for the past
fifteen years. Through partnerships with professional associations, middle-level reform initiatives, and foundations,
we have conducted research and evaluation with hundreds of middle-grades schools throughout the country. The
cornerstone of our evaluation of middle-grades schools is the School Improvement Self-Study, a comprehensive
and cost-effective evaluation and assessment system built on a solid foundation of theory, research, and practice.
Recently, we developed a Self-Study for high schools in response to new national recommendations for high school
reform. Individual schools use the Self-Study data to guide their improvement efforts. CPRD's analyses of state
and regional Self-Study data have been widely disseminated in reports, journal articles, research chapters, and
at state and national conferences. |
